WHAT IS BPA?
Bisphenol A, also commonly referred to as BPA, is an organic chemical. It primarily serves as a basic building block for the production of polymer plastics and coatings, mainly polycarbonate and epoxy resins.
Polycarbonate and epoxy resin are high performance, sustainable and eco-efficient materials. They are well established in respective applications because of their unique combinations of properties.
End-user applications of BPA-based polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins are numerous and diverse, like for example: DVDs, computers and home appliances, spectacles, safety glasses, and optical lenses, reusable water bottles and food storage containers, medical equipment and safety helmets, construction materials, in linings for food and drink cans, as well as high performance paints and coatings to withstand extreme conditions.
Polycarbonate plastic is the main use for BPA, accounting for about 70% of global BPA production. It is often selected because of its unique combination of properties, such as clarity, durability, versatility and its heat and shatter-resistance, which are critical for many applications, such as spectacle lenses or medical equipment.
Polycarbonate plastic is a high performance, sustainable and eco-efficient material used in a large variety of essential everyday applications. Moreover, as it is transparent and clear, it is transmitting light better than alternative plastics materials. Lastly, it has low weight and at the same time offers high design flexibility.
A wide variety of products is made from polycarbonate and contributes substantially to the safety and well-being of consumers, e.g. bicycle helmets, safety glasses.
Epoxy resins constitute nearly 30% of total BPA use. Epoxy resins are selected because of their corrosion protection, thermal stability and mechanical strength.
They are used primarily as coatings for a number of consumer and industrial applications, such as linings for food and drinks cans and protective coatings for automotive and marine uses.
Epoxy resins retain their characteristics for long time periods and under very harsh or heavy-use conditions. Another key use of epoxy resins is in composite materials, e.g. for windmills generating natural power.
